Cake & Bake

Getting the "baked" goods should be a good time.

THE PROBLEM

Design an efficient flow to order cakes from a bakery website. How might we make placing an order easy and convenient.

TIMELINE

March 2022-April 2022

MY ROLE

Sole Ux designer & researcher.

KEY GOAL

Create a fun and efficient workflow for placing a cake order.

MY ROLE

  • Plan and conduct user research and competitor analysis.

  • Interpret data and qualitative feedback.

  • Create user stories, personas, and storyboards.

  • Determine information architecture and create sitemaps.

  • Create prototypes and wireframes.

  • Conduct usability testing

For my second project in my Google certification Ux design course I was to build a responsive website using Adobe XD. The goal was to create an efficient flow to order cakes from a bakery website.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

For my user research I reached out to a group of people varying from those looking to order a cake for a child’s party, a wedding as well as a work function.
The most common theme during the research was looking for a bakery that offered a selection of cakes that could easily accommodate those with allergies/dietary restrictions.

Most people I interviewed stated how most dietary information was not listed on the website and/or online ordering was not available online but only over the phone or in person. Most of us these days are used to the quick convenience of being able to get tasks done quickly online.
Creating a bakery website that users could easily use to order a cake for any event with any dietary need in mind was the goal for this project.

Keep it simple,
keep it fun.

Most bakery websites I observed during my competitive audit all had the theme of bright fun colors but also a simplicity to its design. No wild bells or whistles, just beauty in the simplicity.

BREAKING DOWN THE PROCESS

My goal for this project was to keep it simple. A no frills bakery website to quickly and easily place an order for a cake for any event.

During the competitive audit I notice most websites had a fun, brightly colored theme so I wanted to stay true to, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." One thing I did notice was that the larger company websites offered a rewards program which is a great way to get return business so I wanted to add that into my layout for the website.

THESE WERE SOME MAJOR LEARNINGS OR POINTS WE WANTED TO CALL OUT

Don't mess with a classic.

There was no need to make a chic high-end version of a bakery. Give the people what they want as far as aesthetics tied to a certain service.

Beauty in simplicity.

A straight forward simply designed website allowing the user to get in and get out and get exactly what they're looking for without any added distractions is sometimes just what you need to offer.

Don't be afraid to be wrong.

I went in thinking I could "re-invent the wheel" when it came to how we approach bakery web flows. Again, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
